Emmaus Homes was founded in 1893 by the German Evangelical Church, now part of the United Church of Christ, to provide care for people with developmental disabilities resulting from mental retardation and epilepsy. Following its successful beginning in 1893 at Marthasville, Missouri, the second location at St. Charles, Missouri, was opened in 1901. Today, Emmaus Homes, Inc., which continues its affiliation with the United Church of Christ through the Council for Health and Human Service Ministries, serves over 300 adults in homes located throughout eastern Missouri. Training in home management, self-care, employment and other skills are also provided through Emmaus Homes to enable people with developmental disabilities to live more independently. Emmaus Homes is a non-profit organization funded through various public and private sources. Donations from individuals, churches and charitable organizations comprise a large part of the Emmaus Homes' operating budget. These contributions enable Emmaus Homes to perform its mission of providing a home and an array of habilitative services to people with developmental disabilities thereby allowing them to reach their maximum potential in all areas of life - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. |
